Did You Know...
The Start of Town Square Dedications:
In 1922, the town dedicated six squares (intersections) to those who died in World War I (a seventh square was dedicated in South Natick later). Four of those squares honored those who fought in the Second Battle of the Marne, three dying in the same day. Henry L. Bourett, Dennis J. Moran and Thomas L. Whalen were killed July 15, 1918, while Thomas E. Landers died three days later.
Before there was a Sherwood Plaza...
Sherwood Plaza is built on an old sewer? After Shoppers' World opened in 1951, Route 9 became the focus of many developers eager to repeat the success. Martin Cerel, a local developer known for creating Sherwood, Weathersfield and other Natick neighborhoods, purchased the town's old sewer beds along the south side of Route 9. He sold the land to the Cohen Brothers who built Sherwood Plaza in 1960. Originally the home to Zayres', it is now the site of Dick's Sporting Goods, The ChristmasTree Shop, PetCo and the Five And Below stores.
